winter

We went and found snow right before Christmas. It was either that or staying at the booking we had for a rainy state park cabin experience. Last minute I changed the trip to go to Winthrop WA. Lots and Lots of snow. A very small town experience done in old western style. Countless sledding for Layna (Jonah did not take to it very much) and a quick walk to town over a suspension bridge. It was a wonderful get away

I think that what made it so great for me was memories of going to Berguen as a child. This snowy village in Switzerland has some of my all time favorite childhood/teen memories. It has made me think a lot about home and family. I think that Helen Simonson says it very well in an interview she did on her book Major Pettigrew's Last Stand

"Perhaps home is more precious to those who leave. Away from the everyday annoyances of town and family life, we are free to recollect only the good bits and pine for a landscape that we remember as always bathed in the late-summer evening light. I miss the...countryside with the nostalgia of someone who does not have to put up with the rain, the price of petrol, and lukewarm beer"
