Moving

To those who have been curious enough to venture over to the blog: We are moving. To Kigali Rwanda.

Here are the details in brief order.  Kimi and I have been talking about moving ever since we've entered the States. Every year another year passes that we are here and last year felt like it was finally the right time. We originally hoped for Japan or Asia but couldn't find a teaching position there for Kimi. We however did get offered a second grade teaching position in Kigali Rwanda at International School of Kigali.  It's a great step into the international education community and looks to be a thriving and good school to work. We hope to have a slower and different quality of life there: expose our kids to non western way of life, less screen time for the whole family, more family time, a slower pace of life etc...

As an added bonus, once he got hired, I was also offered a position as nurse educator. We are excited to go and have very mixed emotions about leaving all those that we love and hold dear here in Seattle. This limbo space is not an easy one to live in, but it is the choice that we have made. As one of my friends wrote in a recent post some people are called to go and some are called to stay. We have always felt the desire to go, even though we do so with heavy and hopeful hearts. Our initial contract is for a year, but we hope to extend if all works out well.

The question I get most is: Is it safe? The answer is yes relatively. The genocide that happened is a tragic mark that will forever affect Rwandan society but they have made large strides to put differences behind them. It is one of the more modern cities in Africa and is known as the "eden of the east" for it's lush and rolling landscape. I was also surprised to find out that there is a plastic bag ban in effect and that all moto's are required to provide their clients with helmets. A far cry from the only other African country that I've spent time in (Nigeria).

We leave at the end of July via a visit to my parents in Kandern. We covet any thoughts, prayers that you would like to throw our way. We need them :)

  1. Praying for you guys as you are in these final months. Cherish the time with your Seattle peeps. Take some time to breathe - in the end, you will get there.

  2. This is amazing! Scott and I have been talking about doing the same thing - getting out of the rat race and exposing our kids to a different way of life! We should try and get together to talk before you leave!
